My Vacation From Irma

Image
As hurricane Irma was on her path to destroy Florida, I was on my way to Virginia. I debated staying home and waiting out the storm or leaving. Irma was so big and unpredictable there was really no safe place to escape in Florida or even Georgia.   After monitoring the news, I decided with friends Virginia would probably be a safe place from Irma. We got in the car and drove 15 hours from Fort Lauderdale to Hampton. Hampton, VA. I escaped from water to water. The same element that was possibly ravaging my home and surrounding areas was also peaceful and calm. I visited Fort Monroe in Hampton, VA where I walked along the pier and learned some history about the first Africans in Virginia. My stay in Virginia lasted two days and I was on the road again going back to Florida unsure of Irma’s damage to my home. Before Irma After Irma. The tree fell. More trees down. Luckily, only a few trees were uprooted. There was no flo...

Study Abroad Iceland Part 2

Image
Part 2 of Javon's study abroad experience in Iceland. He discusses his overall experience and most importantly the food. I had a hard time selecting pictures since all of the pictures he sent me were amazing. How was the flight? I flew from Atlanta at 3pm to New York. My flight was delayed 5 hours; I left New York at 11pm and  landed in Iceland at 9am the next day. When I returned I flew into Minneapolis before arriving back in Atlanta. First thought when getting off the plane. It was cold and rainy. The airport was very small. There were a lot of tourists coming into the country. Customs was not really there. Best experience. The entire trip was a great experience.  Worst experience. Everything is really far apart from each other. We spent almost half of our days travelling on charter buses, but we did get to sight-see a lot of the island nation. Most surprising. They spoke English better than most Americ...

Study Abroad Iceland Part 1

Image
My brother Javon is an engineering student and got the amazing opportunity to study abroad for 10 days in Iceland.  I asked him to send me pictures and tell me about his experience and I received over 300 pics and an essay detailing everything about his experience.  So Instead of having an extra long post, I am dividing his Iceland experience into two posts. This post discusses his daily activities abroad. Day 1: I walked across a bridge between two continents. We went to the famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa that sits on top of a lava field. We checked in to the Hjardarbol Guesthouse in the countryside for four days. Day 2: I started classes at Iceland School of Energy at Reykjavik University. We visited a hydro-electric power plant after class to learn how they operate. At night, we hiked to the top of a mountain on an old lava field. At the top was a natural hot spring that we were able to bathe in. The melted gl...
